Woodlawn farm's 1832 stone barn is both an architectural treasure and a soaring stage for the story of the Underground Railroad in Maryland, the local Quaker community who supported it and the region’s rich agricultural history. Working closely with the preservation architect to respect the barn’s character, H+R developed exhibits and an immersive multimedia program that brings visitors face to face with the participants in this history as they struggled with nation-changing questions on slavery and freedom. To protect the historic fabric of the barn, the exhibit projects the multimedia program directly on the stone walls of the interior and uses mobile exhibit components that can be wheeled outside for special events.
