Saving Sequoias

National Park Service, The Giant Forest Museum
LOCATION
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, CA
The sequoia is the most massive and among the rarest trees in the world. The Giant Forest Museum introduces visitors to the distinct needs and life cycle of sequoias—of which only 75 groves remain, all in the High Sierra mountains. Sited in a landmark structure (designed by the same architect who designed the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite), the Giant Forest Museum is one of eleven projects H+R has completed for the National Park Service. The program includes indoor exhibits, tactile interactives along a scenic window wall and thematic paving at the outdoor interpretive plaza that allows visitors to "experience" the height and girth of the tree by walking a huge "ruler" with fun facts along its length.
