This 25th-anniversary exhibit turns the mirror onto America between the Depression and WWII to explore this nation’s understanding of and reaction to the ever-worsening dilemma of Jews across Europe. Using public opinion polls, first person perspectives, newspapers and magazines, archival and newsreel footage, and period films that comprised the information available to Americans of the era, the exhibit suspends hindsight to put visitors in the mindset of this “isolationist period” to show what was and wasn’t understood about the Holocaust.
